Willem was once the son of a minor merchant house in the Amn territory. Born and raised in Athkatla, he had an over-inflated sense of his family’s importance; a trait that most of his family also shared. In his free time, he would head down to the fighting schools and make fun of the brutes that slugged it out, thinking himself above those brutes.

When he was 15, his family made a political move against one of the 5 Merchant houses, hoping to secure a spot on the Council of Five. And in true Amn fashion, all of their financial support and stability was bought right out from under them. Willem ended up homeless, penniless, and destitute. His own self worth, and that of his family that was with him on the streets, kept him from giving up the clothes he managed to keep, which made them the target for almost every cutpurse in the city. Soon after he lost his money and lifestyle, they were mugged for their robes, and all ended up broken, bleeding, and left for dead in the streets.

Willem woke up after 3 days in one of the fighting schools in Athkatla. Very confused, he asked what had happened to him and his family. He was told that they were all found stripped naked and left like so much refuse on the side of the road. The school was trying to clean the bodies away and give them proper burials when they found Willem in the pile, barely holding on to life, with a stab wound in his side. The brought him in and nursed him back to health. None of his family survived.

Faced with his new reality of being completely alone, with no money to back him, and no family to support him, Willem found it hard to adjust. He didn’t know anything about work, and had no idea how to survive without a daily allowance. The school offered to take him in and shelter him, if he agreed to work for them. With no other options, he quickly accepted. The next 5 years were a blur of chores, training, and sparring, and while difficult, he learned the value of earning the respect given him, as opposed to buying it.

Having finally matured into a strong and capable man, Willem decided it was time to reclaim his family’s name and house. He knew that while he could stay in the school and lead a very safe, if somewhat spartan, life, that there was still a part of him that longed for some of the comforts of his old life. And the only way to do that was to be with gold. Having nothing in Athkatla, and hearing rumors about the goblins amassing near Waterdeep, Willem struck out hoping to gain not only some real world experience, but also some gold.
